Everyone of us might have experienced HEADACHE at some point in our life, regardless of age, sex etc. According to WHO, about 47% of the adult population has suffered from headache in the past year. Headache is one of the most common form of pain and is considered as a major factor for people missing out on their work.

Headaches might affect you in the least expected times there by making it difficult to concentrate on what you are doing, you get an uneasy feel about everything. Many medicines are used for the treatment of headache, some of them have side effects while some are effective. Apart from that there are some essential oils that can be used to cure headache. Best Essential Oils

Most of the time, using essential oils alone might not have enough effect on curing headache. But it can be handy when blended together in right amount.

Mainly there are two ways of using essential oils –

1. Aromatherapy – By applying oil directly onto the skin, as these oils penetrates the skin, they will make a strong impact both physically and mentally. While using essential oil, care must be taken since they may lead to burning of skin in some cases. So it’s always advisable to use essential oil along with some carrier oils like avocado oil or almond oil.

2. Inhale the vapours of Essential oil – It is such an effective manner in curing headache or other nausea related problems. Completely fill a bowl with hot water followed by adding few drops of essential oils on the bowl. Cover up your head with a cloth and lean over the bowl to effectively breathe in the steam for few minutes.

Below mentioned are some of the essential oils used extensively by people for aromatherapy and inhalation :

Basil Oil : Basil is a herb used as a topping for Pizzas and Pistas and it certainly tastes good. The oil of basil is often used for curing headache. Since it acts as a muscle relaxant, it can be useful for headaches caused by tension. A facial steam solution of basil leafs can be used to reduce the pain caused by headache. Along with hot water, add couple of basil leafs. Place them together in a large pot. Cover up your head with a towel and lean towards the pot, breath in the steam for 10-15 minutes until headache starts to descend.

Basil leafs were used extensively in Asian countries like India because of its various medicinal value. Their herbs have been in use for the treatment of diarrhea, cough, constipation and other skin related diseases.

Peppermint Oil : Peppermint oil has many health benefits that it is no surprise that it finds itself a place in the medicine list of many people. It is considered as an effective cure for headache.

Make a mixture of almond or some other carrier oils along with few drops of peppermint oil. Rub this solution on your forehead on top of the sinus. When applied correctly, peppermint oils are found to do wonders in effectively curing headache.

Normal usage of peppermint oil along with other blends doesn’t have any side effects. However, pregnant ladies should limit the consumption of peppermint oil very little as possible.

Lavender Oil : For centuries, lavender has been used as an antiseptic and calming effect oil. It is famous for its anti inflammatory features which in-turn helps in regulating the function of blood vessels, this property of lavender oil is what makes it an effective cure for headache.

It is assumed that applying few drops of lavender oil on the upper lip and breathing its vapour for about 10-15 minutes will do wonders in reducing the pain caused by headache. Having said that we don’t have a clear cut evidence on the effect of lavender oils on headache. Still many research works are being conducted on the health benefits of lavender oil.

Eucalyptus Oil : Just like peppermint oil, eucalyptus oil is also found to be effective in the treatment of headache. They have the essential properties capable of relaxing the muscles and clear of the nasal passages. Mix a few drops of eucalyptus oil along with hot water and inhale it for about 10- 15 minutes.

Although eucalyptus is well known for its stimulating and refreshing properties, the oil is actually useful when used as a warming oil for muscle pains, spasms and poor circulation. They can speed up the slow healing of wounds as well as skin irritations, thus making it a two-in-one remedy to keep around the house.

It is important to realize that each and every person is different, the main source of headache might vary with each person. What works for one person doesn’t necessarily means it should work with everyone.

As every plant has different effect on our body, if at any circumstances one type of plant or oil doesn’t yield the desired results you can always try a different one or a blend of two or three oils whichever seems the most effective one.
